In New England the fall is known as foliage season. Many tourists, and other visitors, travel to new England to see the beautiful fall landscapes, and to visit some of the historic towns and cities. This brief article gives some help and advice for those taking holidays in Massachusetts in the fall.
The Massachusetts tourist motto is "Massachusetts: It's All Here", as the state is one where you can drive from the beaches and dunes in the east, to the rolling tree covered hills in the west, in less than three hours. Visitors who arrive in their own car, or who are hiring a car, can plan a route to see the best displays of fall foliage.
There are quite a number of books published describing the best scenic routes for an autumn vacation in New England. One route, which has the honor of being New England's first official scenic route, is the Mohawk trail, which can be reached via Mount Greylock.
The Mohawk Trail/Mount Greylock route combines a scenic drive in the Berkshire Mountains, with a journey over the top of Mount Greylock, the state's highest point. Please be aware that the road over the peak is closed every winter from the first of November.
The Mohawk Trail, along Route 2 from the Connecticut River to the state border, was designated a state scenic tourist route in 1914, by the Massachusetts legislature. These are the trails first walked by the native North American tribes, and are now a highway through some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. In Charlemont, one can find the 6000 acre Mohawk Trail State Forest, where there are several hiking trails, following the original Indian pathways.
Although you can reach the Mohawk Trail without crossing the top of Mount Greylock it is worth making the 8 mile ascent for the views across the unspoiled rural landscape in this part of the state. From the War Memorial Tower at the summit one can see five states.
