An itinerary is something that will make the difference between a good vacation and a bad one. This is true whether you are on a luxury vacation or on a tight budget one. The more you can squeeze out of your money in terms of experience however will definitely affect how great you feel about your time off from the world. Where you plan to take your backpack trip will affect greatly how you will plan your entire trip. If you go to a Western country, most of the time you will find ancillary services that greatly promote and support backpack type activities. This can take the form of budget friendly hotels, hiking trails, routes and campsites even. However, this may not be the case if you go to lesser developed countries like some in Asia and Africa where backpackers are not so well catered to.

However, most hikers and packers would love the thrill of adventure and so despite the lack of facilities, they go to lesser developed areas to explore and to have a bit of an adventure. Nothing beats the thrill of adventure but you must take precautions when going to lesser travelled areas.

When choosing to go far flung areas make sure to travel with someone, especially someone who is familiar with the place that you are going to, or familiar with the surrounding region. Not only will you have someone to talk to when lonely, but you will feel more secure that somebody has your back. Safety in numbers is definitely true in this case.

When going out to an undisclosed or remote location, make sure that you have gather some intel first regarding the general area. Try to read up on news of the peace and order situation of where you are headed so as ensure that you will be really safe. Never gamble with your life by going to critically dangerous areas, you are meant to go out and have fun, not running for your life.

Once you do get to your intended target region or destination, make a few local friends. These local friends can in fact serve as tour guides for you and can show you things that are not generally known or shared. It is always wise to make friends on your journeys. In fact making friends is probably half the journey itself when you backpack.

As additional advice, since you will be hiking in areas unknown to you, always bring plenty of drinking water with you. Also, ask around or mark on your map the closest clinics and hospitals so you know exactly know where to go in a medical emergency. It would not hurt to know where local law enforcement offices are also.

Likewise to get the best trip possible, you have to adjust your mind set. Local places the world over will not have the same things you will expect, but each will have their own unique contribution to your trip. Lower your expectations, go on and head out there, and have fun.
