The Six Things Every Visitor Must Experience While

By Terry Hunefeld

Del Mar is a lovely upscale beach town in Southern California just north of San Diego. Del Mar is Spanish for "by the sea." Del Mar is located along the Pacific Ocean and was founded in the nineteenth century as a seaside resort for the rich and famous.

For good reason, Del Mar is the most popular beach community in San Diego. Great beaches, world-class Del Mar hotels, seaside fairgrounds, famous horseracing and a lovely downtown village provide lots of activities for everyone. Powerhouse Park even has a big children's playground and is especially great for families with young kids. Beachgoers can also find delicious inexpensive eats at Roberto's taco stand on Carmel Valley Road, overlooking the beautiful Los Penasquitos Lagoon.

Del Mar has a very long record of Hollywood celebrities visiting because of the horse track that Bing Crosby and Jimmy Durante founded in 1936. Their star power made the Del Mar Race Track one of the most gorgeous and esteemed tracks in the world of racing. The horse track brought a steady steam of Hollywood types to the hotels in Del Mar. As a result, numerous Del Mar resorts and inns were founded and thrived.

Del Mar beach hotels and lodging accommodations are wonderful, albeit expensive. One of the most romantic Del Mar hotels is located near the shores of the Pacific Ocean: the timeless L'Auberge Del Mar, a time-honored California coastal resort that, as they say, "Celebrates the special connection we all have with the tranquility, comfort and relaxation of the sea."

Aviara Four Seasons is ranked among the finest and most elegant resorts in the world by Traveler Magazine. This fine resort brings together phenomenal coastal views, marvelous sophistication and tailored service to produce a one-of-a-kind romantic vacation at a San Diego beach resort.

The age-old San Diego County Fair has been held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds every summer. Locals refer to it as the Del Mar Fair - no one ever calls it the San Diego County Fair. The fair's location is perfect because it is only several blocks from the refreshingly cooling breezes from the Pacific Ocean on the first hot days of summer. If you decide to visit the fair, make sure you get reservations for accommodation before hand from any of the Del Mar inns or Del Mar hotels.

There are not many Del Mar beach hotels or Del Mar beach bed and breakfasts. One of the few is both intimate and romantic and costs under $175 a night. It's just 5 minutes up the coast highway from downtown Del Mar, a little boutique inn called the Del Mar Bed and Breakfast.

Del Mar has two seaside parks - Seagrove and Powerhouse - both great for picnicking and stunning ocean views. Often referred to as "Malibu South," Del Mar hotels are second to none, especially the luxury beach hotels. Visitors love the trendy cafes and Italian restaurants located along Old Coast Highway 101.
