For The Perfect Country Hotel Devon Has What It Takes

By Tracie Knight

Traveling to different parts of the world can really broaden your horizons. If art, fashion and nightlife is your thing, big cities like London, New York or Tokyo are a great option. However, if you want an easy destination where you can just relax and be one with nature, it's time to head to the countryside. For the perfect country hotel Devon is the place to be.

Devon is one of the counties of England. It lies in the southwest, between Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset. To the south, it is bordered by the English Channel and to the north, by the Bristol Channel.

Devonshire shares the popular Exmoor National Park with neighboring Somerset. Another extremely popular park to visit is Dartmoor National Park. Whether you're within park land or anywhere else in the county, you'll be able to commune with nature. The landscape varies from rolling heath-covered hills to valleys and agricultural land. Walking is a great way to explore but horse-riding and cycling are good options too. Another option is to head to the rivers for some kayaking or canoeing or to try your hand at fly-fishing.

Some of the most spectacular paths follow the coastline with its dramatic views from atop high cliffs, especially along the northern coast. To get a different point of view, charter a yacht and go sailing, which is a very popular activity along the southern coast. Both coasts offer the perfect waves for surfing too.

Plymouth is the largest of the cities in Devon and has historically been an important harbor. It was from here that people like Sir Francis Drake and the Mayflower's Pilgrim Fathers set sail. Exeter with its stunning cathedral and medieval architecture is another popular place to visit. However, don't just stick to the larger towns when you want some culture. The charming villages throughout the countryside are well worth exploring and you can't leave without having had a drink or two in a real English pub.

When hunger strikes, you're definitely in the right place. The Devonshire cream tea is famous throughout the world and consists of scones with jam and cream. If you're looking for filling comfort food, you can't go wrong with a pasty, Hog's pudding or fish and chips. Along the southern coast, be sure to try the crab. Wash it all down with locally produced cider, gin, craft beers or wine.

There is no best time to visit. Winters are mild and snow is rare and only found in the higher parts. Summers are sunny and can be quite warm for England, which of course makes these months perfect for beach activities.

There are many accommodation options in Devon but a great bet is to stay in a country hotel and use this as a base from which to explore. Simply look online to find one that is to your liking. If you're planning on coming here in summer though, it's wise to book your accommodation ahead because this is quite a busy season.
