Escape Into The Wild With Foggy Bottom Canoe In Kingston Springs

By Janine Hughes

City life can quickly take its toll. To ease the stress, you need regular escapes into the wilderness, where things are calm and peaceful and the air is fresh and clean. Foggy Bottom Canoe offers the perfect way to get back to nature, only a stone's throw from Nashville's lights.

The canoe rental outfit is located in Kingston Springs. This little town is home to around three thousand people. It is located along the Harpeth River in Cheatham County and the drive from Nashville takes only about half an hour.

There are several lovely parks in and around Kingston Springs, among them the Kingston Springs City Park. Here you can go for a short walk, play a ball game or have a picnic and the riverside location means that it's easy to cool down on a hot summer's day. If you want some adventure, drive a couple of miles out of town and soar among the treetops on a zipline tour. Otherwise, explore the many hiking trails in the area.

The star of the show in the area is the meandering Harpeth River with its many bends. Here you can go fishing or just have a swim. The best way to enjoy the river, though, is to rent a canoe and go paddling. You may even decide on a guided trip with the folks at Foggy Bottom. Because the river is calm, canoeing here is safe even if you've never done this before.

A highlight for many visitors to the area is the Narrows of the Harpeth. This area is located where two horseshoe bends in the river almost meet. Here you'll find the historic Montgomery Bell Tunnel, which cuts through almost 300 feet of limestone rock. Built in 1819, it was one of the USA's first water diversion tunnels. If you're interested in archaeology, you may also want to explore Mound Bottom, a Native American complex which dates from the Middle Ages.

To make your journey of exploration along the Harpeth River even more enjoyable, you'll need the right gear. Good hiking shoes are essential if you're planning on exploring the many hiking trails. Insect repellent is a good idea too. A good sunscreen, plenty of water and some snacks are important as well and don't forget to bring your bathing suit, especially if you're going canoeing.

Kingston Springs boasts a warm, temperate climate. Even in the winter months the days are mild and pleasant. However, it can be humid here since the area sees quite a lot of rain throughout the year. The driest months are in late summer and early fall and this is the perfect time to visit if you want to hike in comfort but also want to swim in the river.

The folks of Foggy Bottom and the Kingston Springs area can easily be visited for the day. Should you decide that you'd like to spend the night rather than drive back to Nashville, though, you'll find a range of accommodation options and restaurants in and around town. For popular weekends, such as around public holidays, it's best to book in advance.
