In Sri Lanka, lion rock is totally recommended. This is an awesome place you should hit up for sure! This place is also known as Sigiriya and Lion Rock. It is bang in the middle of Sri Lanka and makes for a simply marvellous experience and backpacking journey.

Getting to Sigiriya

To get to Sigiriya we recommend basing yourself in the funky town called Dambulla which is nearby. From here it is a short tuk tuk, bus or taxi ride to the town part of Sigiriya and the rock. You can also enjoy the cafes, bars and sights of Dambulla while you are there.

How much will you pay to climb Sigiriya?

The truth hurts and Sigiriya is not cheap. It is a very expensive place to visit, coming in at thirty United States Dollars for a one person ticket. While this might sound like a crazy amount, bear in mind that you are visiting a truly marvellous world heritage site.

What is the Lion Rock at Sigiriya?

Sigiriya is a really big rock. Since 1982 it has been rightly declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are over 1,000 hand written poems on the wall, all written between the 7th and 14th century. Visitors to Sigiriya walk around the grounds before ascending to the peak of the rock for sensational views and to see the old city.

For what length of time should you stay at Sigiriya?

The top of Sigiriya is somewhat inspirational and you really need to savour the moment at the top and contemplate where life has taken you. It will take a few hours all in all but totally worth it.

There is a marvellous yet over priced gift shop. You can eat food here at the stalls and tour the magnificent museums, rocks and temples.
