Argentina to Paraguay via Brazil

By Jonny Blair

Do you want to successfully cross the border between Argentina and Paraguay?

So there are various ways to cross the border between Argentina and Paraguay - I went from Puerto Iguazu, ARGENTINA to Ciudad del Este, PARAGUAY. Back in December 2010. Although looking back, this border crossing seemed easy compared to others I've passed through, there is still a need to be careful, read on and I'll tell you exactly what I did. This was one of the strangest border crossings I have ever done, for the reason that in the space of 45 minutes I was in three countries!! Confused? Yes it confused me a bit...this is the first of a series of reports on crossing world borders from my travels...

The first thing to know is - you board a bus at Puerto Iguazu bus station with PARAGUAY as the destination on it. These buses are yellow and single decker with the words El Practico on it. They leave fairly regularly throughout the day. I did my crossing on a Sunday morning, around 10 am I think. I don't think you can buy tickets in advance, just check out of your hostel or hotel in the town of Puerto Iguazu and head to the bus station (there is only one main bus station in Puerto Iguazu). I would definitely recommend doing this early morning - no idea if the border would be open at night - nor if it would be safe to risk it.

I was on my own and I was basically wanting to get across into Paraguay and then onwards to Asuncion.

Ciudad del Este, the name for this city means City of The East, is on the other side of the river from Argentina. The river acts as the border, and the bridge is the preferred crossing. As this is a post about the border crossing, I won't change the subject but I had already been to Tres Fronteras - the point where you can see all three countries. It gets confusing when you realise that your bus to Paraguay goes VIA BRAZIL.

So I pay 5 Argentine Pesos for my bus and ask the driver to confirm if he will stop at the border for me to get my passport stamped. I was the only one on the bus that didn't come from either Brazil, Argentina or Paraguay. Those countries have some sort of agreement with one another that prevents them needing visas or passport stamps to border cross into the other.

I actually thought that a lot of "backpackers" (I don't like that term, but I guess I probably am one...) would be going on the route from Iguazu across the border into Paraguay next to see Ituapu Dam and the famous Jesuit Ruins at Trinidad. But I spoke to lots of people at the hostel (the wonderful Hostel Inn Iguazu Falls) and none of them were going to Paraguay. A few of them even said to me "why are you going there?"! That kind of statement that makes me realise that some of us are made to be travellers and some are just not. An avid traveller will always go anywhere, anytime and often for no reason. Someone who is not an avid traveller will be more fussy about where they go. I am not - I will go anywhere. In any case there were no other "backpackers" on my bus or in the station that morning.

When you travel in South America you should have some kind of knowledge of Spanish at least (I actually studied in Montevideo but my Spanish is still shocking) so you can chat to locals and bus drivers. Once I saw the "queue for Paraguay" developing, I joined it, bag laden to the core and sweaty. But I had my passport in hand and had already all of my money changed into Paraguayan Guarani. This is important - make sure you change ALL your Argentine Pesos (except for the price of the bus) over into Paraguayan Guarani in Puerto Iguazu. You can do this anytime in daylight hours, even on a Sunday morning - I found a small bank/exchange place in town open around 9am to got mine changed in there.

After getting on the bus you will be taken out of the town of Puerto Iguazu to the border bridge with BRAZIL first of all. Yes, don't be surprised at this point, as you are still on the bus to PARAGUAY! At the Argentine exit customs you need to make sure you ask the driver to let you get off to get your passport stamped. A lot of those on the bus may not need it - the majority of them are locals.

Get out, taking your bags with you and get your passport stamped and then straight back on the bus. Make sure the driver waits for you. Then you will cross the Iguazu River into Brazil but you won't stop at Brazilian border control. This is a regular route and the sign on the front of the bus lets you know that you are heading directly to Paraguay. So we are now in BRAZIL, "in transit on a bus" officially.

You arrive in the city of Foz Do Iguacu which you drive through quickly, I have written a lot more about the actual waterfalls and my first trip across into Brazil elsewhere on this blog. You'd be crazy to be on this route without having visited the nearby Iguazu Falls.

After twenty minutes roughly in Brazil on the bus you will arrive at an odd bridge. You can see a border checkpoint here, but bypass it. This place is the Brazilian border checkpoint. You will remember being in Brazil for twenty minutes, but your passport will not have any proof of it. You do not need to get your passport stamped at these two Brazilian passport checkpoints, BUT once your bus arrives onto the bridge to Paraguay, keep checking for the Paraguayan entrance border checkpoint. Basically the driver won't stop so charge to the front of the bus and yell to be let out!

Unfortunately when you tell the driver to stop and you get out, he won't wait for you as the passengers onboard Don't want to hang around waiting for a gringo to get their passport stamped. You get out and are immediately in the madness of Ciudad del Este, while your bus continues on its route.

It is not recommended to cross this border by foot by the way, mainly because of robberies and safety issues. For the sake of 5 Pesos you might as well get the bus. I had to run to the front of the bus and yell at the driver to stop, this was a few kilometres ahead of the checkpoint. I had assumed he was stopping soon. SO I had to get out on my own. I asked him if he would wait and when I realised he wouldn't, then I had to grab both my bags. This was my arrival into Paraguay!

I had to find the place to stamp the passport now - it was hidden shyly in a very obscure spot in the middle of a building site on the Paraguay side of the bridge. I wish I had a video from above of my trip that morning - it was just crazy. It was hot and I was bag laden, but within a few minutes I found the passport place and was the only person in there. They stamped my entry and I was now legally in Paraguay! In the last hour I had been in 3 countries, though officially just Argentina and Paraguay.

I can't promise you that this is the simplest way across the border into Paraguay from Brazil (or Argentina) but I loved it partly because I was the only real traveller about. I could tell instantly that Ciudad del Este was a crazy city. Lots of locals asked me if I wanted to buy stuff. You can stay a night or two in this border city known as Ciudad del Este if you want but I had no time to linger as I wanted to get to Asuncion fairly quickly.

So from opposite the passport control, I found a taxi driver who would take me to the central bus station in Ciudad del Este for a fee of a few US Dollars (but thousands of Guarani). These are normally trustable but agree a price first and get yourself off the busy, crazy streets!

This is part of my ongoing series on border crossings to hopefully help my fellow travellers out there. Get in touch and share your stories especially if you have done similar border crossings!

Safe travels!

Do people still send postcards?

By Jonny Blair

One of my first travel memories was seeing a postcard come through our letterbox when I was a child in Bangor, Northern Ireland. As a kid, you ignore those boring brown or white envelopes and you are intrigued by colour so the postcard that arrived in the post caught my eye.

It was either a postcard from the Netherlands or from London, but I told my Mum I wanted to keep it. For me a postcard is the ultimate travel souvenir. A postcard itself is a journey. It means little or nothing to get an e-mail with a photo on it when you compare it with the journey of a postcard. I fear it's becoming a forgotten art, hence why I still send my family a postcard from EVERY single new place I go.

Last time I was in my homeland with family I checked out the postcard collection that I had sent them. I was amazed that it has now reached well over 100 postcards from over 50 different countries.

These postcards have been bought, written and posted from all seven continents - yes I even found a postbox at Port Lockroy in Antarctica! All the postcards detail where I was, what I did and showed a picture and a stamp. Arrival of my postcards to my family's home is the completion of a crazy journey.

From a very cold chilly hut in the British Antarctic Base of Port Lockroy I bought, wrote and posted postcards. From the world's coldest continent all the way to Northern Ireland in the northern hemisphere, this is a great journey for a bit of card, miles from the world of internet and mobile phones.

Perhaps the younger travellers amongst us even wonder why anyone would bother sending a postcard, when you can just e-mail. Well it's the story of the postcard that does it for me!!

Spot the difference:

1. An e-mail: E-mail v Postcard? I logged on and typed an email and sent it from a computer. I think we all know the answer to that one, at least I do!

2. Postcards: Postcards v. e-mails? A postcard is physical and real - it was bought in a shop on holiday, written by a beach and then posted in a town. You didn't even need internet.

what one would you prefer to get?

Don't forget on your next trip you should send a postcard! A physical present. Sending postcards to friends and family really puts a smile on their faces and means a lot more to people than an e-mail.

I love postcards, don't stop buying them, don't stop writing them, don't stop posting them and Don't Stop Living!

How To Do Australia on the Cheap!

By Jonny Blair

Who told you Australia was expensive? Someone that didn't do it on the cheap like me...

I've heard from loads of people that have gone backpacking in the land down under that it is a dear or expensive place to travel. These people really must be living a luxury lifestyle if that's their impression of the land down under. Australia has to have been one of the cheapest places I have ever travelled and worked in, I earned tons of money when I was living there, enough to take four months off work. Young and inexperienced backpackers must be doing things wrong if they find it expensive. Maybe they are perhaps ill-informed, badly prepared or just spending their cash in the wrong way. I've concocted 12 sure fire reasons, all from personal experience on how to live cheaply in Australia.

1. Sleeping - Yes hostels are great but take a break away from them. Don't just spend your whole time in hostels getting pissed! Camping out is the best accomodation option for travelling cheap in Australia. A tent can be purchased for $15 - 20 and some nights you will end up camping out for free. Make a tent your home for a few months as you "backpack" your way round the land down under. Nearly all campsites have toilets and showers by the way, lots of them are also close to places where you can get part time and temporary jobs.

2. Eating - If you insist on eating out - then head to pubs that do $10 steaks and such offers. They often throw in a beer or a soft drink for this. One of the tricks I used while in Australia is monitoring pubs that did cheap big meals and the times they apply. I found that most of them are lunchtime specials. In which case, it's hardly a big deal to transfer your main meal of the day from dinner to lunch. Eat cereals and toast for breakfast. Don't be afraid to venture into Hungry Jacks or McDonalds for a cheap breakfast either. Hungry Jacks also offer unlimited refills - take your flask in. They're not going to chase out paying customers. And McDonalds has free wi-fi. If all else fails stick to vegemite sandwiches! Top notch!

3. Transport - Don't be getting flights around Australia! I lived there for a couple of years and I never used an internal flight. Use the bus company Greyhound and book them early, even better idea is to hook up with others, get a car and off you go on a road trip - you have a car now which you should equip for sleeping in and stay on or near campsites with it. Cut your costs by sharing petrol and sharing lifts to work. Also if you are getting a Greyhound bus get it at night so that you save money on accommodation. These are simple and obvious things by the way but often neglected by travellers. Other good places to look are hostel notice boards and local travel websites. Gumtree and Facebook can also be useful.

4. Get a Working Visa (of some kind) - I can't understand how those that are eligible for a working holiday visa in Australia don't use it. The amount of travellers I met in Australia that said "we're only here for 3 months so we're not working" then followed it up by "this place is dear", well why didn't you just get a working visa then? Even working for just a week or two in Australia can earn you over a thousand Australian Dollars.

5. Entrance Fees - Again it sounds obvious but don't be paying entry into places - there are loads of FREE things to see and do in Australia. Hiking for one, some amazing landscapes to see, beaches (completely free), fancy dress parties (make your own costumes for free), museums are often also free entry (including the amazing War Memorial in Canberra), as is walking across Sydney Harbour Bridge. If you want to see Koalas and Kangaroos - these can all be done for free. Kennet River on the Great Ocean Road is a decent spot for Koala watching at sunrise. Kangaroos and wallabies are hard to miss.

6. Coupons, vouchers and tokens - These are lying around everywhere and they are FREE to pick up. You see them in hostels, bars, bus stops, travel agents, airports etc. Next time you see a magazine or a leaflet - pick it up - they normally have vouchers inside them and often with discount off entry into places, cheap lunch or just general savings or tips which come in handy.

7. Buy Value Brands - Value brands such as those available in Woolworths and Coles are worth buying. The quality of the food and drink is really not that much worse than the top brands to be honest and yu can live a healthy and stable eating lifestyle by buying the cheap stuff.

8. Nightclubs after 10pm - did you really go to Australia just to attend expensive nightclubs? I certainly didn't! You'll notice that after 9 or 10 pm (especially on weekends) the prices of drinks go up. Seriously to all those backpackers in Australia - get yourself a carryout, a box of goon and some tinnies and sit with your new found friends.

9. Don't Spend Too Much Time On the Internet - Facebook is great and all that but seriously you didn't go to Australia just to tell other people where you are and what you're doing. So stop moaning about the price of the internet - yes it costs a lot so don't pay it - simple. Here's a few alternatives (if you have brought a laptop with you) - eat at McDonalds and use their free wi-fi, buy a coffee in an internet cafe that has wi-fi (at least you have a coffee for your money), stay in a hostel that has free wi-fi. If you don't have a laptop - borrow from travel buddies if you really need to get online. And a long term cheaper option is to buy a USB stick which acts as a wireless internet modem - this is only recommended if you plan on staying in Australia for a while.

10. Don't book things in advance. Why pay a deposit online for a hostel that you will stay in next week? Scared it will sell out? In the event of that type of thing ever happening, you'll have your tent and can offer to sleep in the garden for a $5, most hostels will take pity on you and let you sleep on their sofas anyway. Book as you go, and if its hostels go into the cheapest dorm.

11. Laundry - The obvious is to wear the same clothes over and over again, and hand wash them. Done that myself manys a time. If you really feel the need to use laundry - get 2-3 cotton buds on sticks and stick them in the coin slots in the machines to get free laundry. Most of you reading will know this trick. A well known travellers "secret".

12. Use Fake student ID - Yes things become cheaper when you have a student card. I'm not telling you to be fraudulent - just get a fake student ID card - you'll save entry fees in a lot of places - it's not like you're going to climb over the fence into zoos!

So basically - get yourself over to Australia and enjoy it - but do it cheaply. Take my tips and have an amazing time in the crazy land down under!

Get out there and see Australia - what are you waiting for?

With so much attention focused on video games and other electronics, basic toys like swings can sometimes be overlooked. Nonetheless, they provide lots of benefits, including getting your children to spend more time outside and discover how to come up with develop games of their very own without depending on video games. This winds up increasing a kid's mental, physical and social capabilities all in one activity.

Various other things to consider when choosing an outside swing are appearance and use.

If your swing will be visible year-round, it is smart to get an attractive-looking swing or one that works well in your yard environment. Tree swings in themselves can look very cool, however, you might think about painting the seat a particular color or attaching a cool hammock chair.

Usability is yet an additional element. The greater number of individuals who can use it, the more the swing can be used. Can it support children and grownups? What about 2 people at one time? Is there a good view from the swing or is it situated in a location that makes people want to go there?

Safety is also crucial. The longer the rope, the greater the area that is required by the swing. Naturally, you don't want any hazardous or sharp items close by, but you also want to determine that you have enough clearance space for your swing.

Bear in mind, essentially, you want your swing to be fun and user-friendly so that you can keep using it for years to come.

Florida Villas: The Best Place To Be

By Carol Baker

Take a moment and think Florida villas. What pops into your head must be the right vacation you'll have. Do you want to look out over the ocean while you eat dinner? What about a game of golf afterward? Probably a trip to a local art gallery or an outside concert in the park. You'll need a calming day before you decide to take the kids to Disney world the next day. Indeed, you can perform all that from a hotel room, exactly why is a Florida villa the place for you? Relieved you inquired.

Villas were originally the country homes for Italian nobility and the wealthy. Now, celebrities like George Clooney have one and don't seem to want to leave. After two days in Florida villas, you'll never want to depart either. As either part of a larger resort, or separated from the typical tourist hotels and areas, a Florida villa holiday is one thing unusual you won't ever forget.

To find one, you need to begin searching Florida vacation websites by the city you want to stay near and filter the results by 'villa'. Once you're there, you can sort by the rent you want to pay, the number of bedrooms, private pool, or even if you want the kitchen stocked and ready for you on arrival.

No matter where you decide to go, it's never a long drive to a baseball game, golf course, horse track or a stock car race. There's also that little football team called the Dolphins waiting for you. If you want something a little more filling than a stadium hot dog, then you'll find more world class restaurants than you'll have time to eat at, even if you stay all winter.

With regards to attractions, there's more to Florida than only the House of Mouse. There are over a dozen primary aquariums, not to include Sea World. Busch Gardens is one more amazing location for your family. You want to take a day for golf? There are more than one hundred sixty five courses for to select from.

If you like the in house life, there is still a villa for you. Numerous Florida villas are found within minutes of the libraries, museums, historical places and malls. During the night, you'll find yourself just as close to several of the most incredible clubs and concert locations you'll ever witness.

When choosing a vacation house, here are a few things to consider why you want to choose from Florida villas:

1) Villas offer more room than even a spacious hotel room at a lower cost. Rental rates are for the house and not per person. More luxury for less money.

2) Since they are houses, Florida villas offer more personal conveniences for your comfort such as full kitchen facilities, private swimming pools and full size, private bedrooms.

3) Most of the villas are in private, locally managed, therefore they are maintained at a higher criterion than resort rooms. In addition, native owners know the best places to go and where you can get the perfect shopping deals.

World's Highest Irish Pub

By Jonny Blair

I'm surprised it's taken me this long to actually write about my trip to the Wild Rover in La Paz, Bolivia, also known as the world's highest Irish Pub. And it's official. I have also been to Paddy Flaherty's in Cuzco which claims to be the highest (and many others in Peru and Bolivia do), but for now the limelight is on the Wild Rover and the madness within.

Housed in the lofty Bolivian city of La Paz, you can find the Wild Rover Backpackers on 1476 Comercio Street. I wasn't actually staying there mind you, I chose to stay at the nearby Loki Hostel instead (it's literally round the corner). On the first floor of the Wild Rover backpackers is housed a cosy, friendly wee Irish Pub, also of course known as the Wild Rover. At an elevation of well over 3,000 metres above sea level, this little enclave away from the monstrocity of La Paz had the nice honour of being the world's highest Irish Pub. So I just had to pop in!

The Wild Rover is a decent place not just for the pub - you can organise tours from it - to all over Bolivia and indeed they helped book my Salar tour and a few of my buses. I didn't have time to do everything I wanted in La Paz but I found time for a relaxing beer in the world's highest Irish Pub and I stood on the pitch at the world's highest football stadium.

As a Northern Irishman it was nice to see a few Northern Irish mentions in the pub, Geordie Best made it onto the wall here in the world's highest Irish Bar. Amazing to see him feature there and it made me feel at home for a while!

I posed for a photo with my travelling Northern Ireland flag - we are a small proud part of the island and we need more publicity!

As I sat down ready for a beer the guy serving me had a Northern Irish accent! I couldn't believe it - it was Grant from Carryduff in County Down, Northern Ireland!!

Grant serves me then comes to this side of the bar to join me for a beer and a chat. It's all a bit surreal! We talk about Tayto, Milky Ways, Gaelic football and Glentoran FC. Grant even puts on his County Down gaelic top!

I also met a girl from Dublin in there - a Liverpool fan and we were sat watching a live European match between Liverpool and Utrecht!

Against the background of the Irish Tricolour flag, Grant and I got a few photos of my travelling Northern Ireland flag.

The likes of Ash and Van Morrison came on the dukebox as Grant connected up his iPod to the speakers in the pub! I then spoke to the manager Jack about maybe working there on my travels, but alas I was headed to Peru too soon and wasn't able to add a fourth continent to my "worked in an Irish pub" list.

Not only is it the highest Irish Pub on the planet, but it's a pretty lively, crazy Irish Pub too. Dancing on the tables and bar, mild nudity, fancy dress, pouring bottles down your neck. This is a place to forget how high up you are, forget the outside world and leave your inhibitions at home. Party hard!

Cheers and Slainte with Grant, the sublime experience of having a Bolivian beer at some 3,660 metres above sea level. Amazing. It wasn't a Guinness - a Pacena would have to do...

,

It's hidden shyly, and it's part of the hostel, but you do not need to be staying in the hostel to drink there, nobody was checking on the way in.

Situated on a random street and sinking deep into Bolivian mountains is where you find the Wild Rover and I have been to an Irish pub in 6 out of the 7 continents (didn't find on eon my trip to Antarctica).

A lifestyle of travel indeed and I loved every minute of my trip to The Wild Rover - the highest Irish Pub on the planet. Definitely a great place to relax and thanks to Grant the barman for serving me, chatting away, posing for flag photos and providing such awesome music and a fabulous travel experience!

The Irish say "Top of the morning to ye!" but here it was a case of "Top of the world to ye!".

Abandoning Ship: What to put in your Ditch Bag

By Noel Swanson

Sometimes even the best equipped boats can sink Despite good seamanship, and excellent safety equipment, sometimes the unexpected can happen. It might be an engine fire, or running into a floating container, or being holed by a fallen mast or even lightening, but it can happen when you least expect it.

Admittedly a catamaran is far less likely to sink than a monohull, mainly because it isn't dragging around 5 tons of lead bolted to it's keel, but even so, it is prudent to be prepared for the worst, to have a backup plan to all the other backup plans.

What do you need to survive if your boat does sink?

There are two important goals you need to consider:

1. You need to stay alive until the rescue services can find you.

2. You need to be rescued as quickly as possible.

Depending on the circumstances, and how quickly help may arrive, you will need to make sure you have sufficient survival gear:

Most important is, of course a liferaft. Without one of those you aren't going to stay alive for too long in the deep blue ocean! We personally have a Viking RescYou. Whatever type you get, do get it regularly serviced and make sure you see it activated so you know how it works and what comes with it.

Second, you need an abandon ship bag. Also known as a grab-bag, ditch bag, ditch kit or flee bag, this is a handy floating waterproof bag that is pre-loaded with some essential survival equipment.

Now, here's the key. The bag must be waterproof. You are about to jump off your boat into the ocean! probably in the middle of a raging storm. You do NOT want all your gear to get soaked.

Also crucial is that it floats. Usually they do so simply because of the trapped air inside, but do test it! And make sure it also has a lanyard so you can tie it to your liferaft. That makes one less thing to worry about.

On my own boat I use one of my old white water rafting dry bags. They do the job perfectly.

Finally, the bag must be stored where it can be easily reached. Remember, the chances are that you will need it in a hurry, in the middle of the night, in the middle of a storm, with your boat either on fire, full of water, or upside down. You don't have time to be digging deep into your under-bed storage locker.

You will find architecture reminiscent of something from a fairy tale, and you will often find signs and directions in both languages because of the amount of traffic that goes back and forth.

If you want to get to Spain, you ought to check out the Languedoc-Roussilon area. Near the border itself, you'll be able to see many remnants of Spanish architecture on its buildings. There is also the famed Pyrenees Mountains which will be of wonderful view. Cassoulets and wines of all sorts will have certain features of Spain mixed into them as well.

A trip to Nice means being close to Italian influences and a fascinating history that was not always pleasant or even honorable. In this region you will find many sidewalk cafes that offer typical fare found in Italy, rather than the French cuisine that may be expected. Farmer markets offer many varieties of olives and other products, and this is a land of sun and sea as well as plenty of things to see and enjoy. You can spend your entire stay here going back and forth, visiting the local attractions and sampling some of the finest foods and meals you can find anywhere.

Two other well known border regions include the Nord Pas De Calais as well as the Rhone Alps. Located just a stone's throw away from Nord Pas De Calais will be the nation of Belgium. Here, beer is the preferred beverage instead of wine, which you might be expecting. Similarly, you'll see many little breweries around the area instead of vineyards. In Rhone Alps, astounding views of snow-capped mountains will be available, along with its distinguished spa services and magnificent massages which are not available anyplace else.

There's more companies to hire a campervan from than just Britz

By Tim Ahern

When considering renting a motorhome or campervan in Australia, then chances are that you will come across the dominant company, Britz, in your research. But, before you go ahead and book anything with them, fantastic as they are, maybe you should take a look at some of the 60 other companies that are available to you. Here you will find a mention of just a few of them, and some tips on finding the perfect campervan for you on your next trip to Australia.

Clearly the biggest player in the Australian motorhome hire market is the company Britz. They achieve this through their own brand of vehicles as well as the extended family brands of Kea, Maui and Mighty Campers. Together they have more vehicles than any other company. The biggest competitor to them would have to be the Apollo brand of campers. The Apollo family consists of Apollo, Cheapa Campa and Hippy Campers. Each one is positioned to go up against Britz in each market segment of superior, mid-range and budget respectively. In any research in to campervan hire in Australia, the Apollo range should be looked at as a key alternative.

If you are looking to hire a campervan in the budget range, then you will come across Hippy Campers and Mighty Campers in your research, but you will also inevitably find Wicked Campers. Wicked are a lead player in the budget market however have a reputation for cutting corners and having under-maintained vehicles leading to breakdowns. This has not stopped development of a loyal fan base though, and expansion of the brand worldwide. You will be wanting to get a quote from these guys whilst shopping around. When it comes to alternatives to these massive brands though, try looking in to Awesome Campers and Travellers Autobarn. Both have had rapid expansion over the last few years and Travellers Autobarn has also been winning awards for the way they do business. Both these companies have depots the length of the east coast of Australia and so offer a great alternative to the majors. They are the leaders of the alternative group of companies.

But Britz really is aimed at the middle to upper price range of campervans. So what are some alternatives in this range? Well, staying clear of the aforementioned camper companies that are owned by Britz and Apollo, one mentionable alternative is Around Australia Motorhomes. This company is going for the luxury motorhome market and are definitely hitting their mark. No skimping with this crowd! Their fleet consists mainly of top-end Winnebago's for the clientele that want space and luxury during their travel. If this is you, then definitely get a price from them before booking anywhere else. Independently owned, they pride themselves on client satisfaction and are a small enough company to care what the end user thinks but large enough to have a number of vehicle options.

There is also a mid priced company worth mentioning called Energi Motorhomes. It is not heavily promoted, but users appear to be happy with them. They don't have a huge marketing budget it seems, so they don't pop up early in search results, but if you can find a price-comparison site that represents them, then take note. The vehicles they supply are quite modern and the prices seem quite good - but not so cheap they are unbelievable, which is a good thing. Anyway, if you do a search on a website for Energi and they don't turn up in the results, keep looking until you find a site that represents them and give them some serious thought before booking.

And one additional company to mention is Camperman Campervans. Camperman has been growing rapidly over the last couple of years, modernizing their fleet with the latest Toyota Hiace's which is the same model that all the major players use. Keep in mind, therefore, that you can get pretty much the same vehicle as the major players for a lesser price. It is something that should pique an interest when researching your campervan hire. They also have depots at all the major points along the east coast of Australia, so there is plenty of choice on where to pick up and where to drop off - just like Britz. All in all, they offer a strong alternative in the mid-priced campervan hire market, and should definitely be considered when doing price and style research.

So, if you are looking for a cheap campervan, a mid range motorhome or a luxury RV, there are definitely alternatives available to the dominant Britz range. I have only covered a handful here. If are hiring from Sydney, the largest Australian city, there are over 30 companies that have depots available to you. Make sure when researching which company to hire from, you look for a website that gives at least 20 different companies in the results for your search criteria.
