Deception Island is a totally magnificent place and this was another amazing journey on planet earth, almost James Bond style as we waited on deck. What lay ahead was the boat having to squeeze its way through a narrow passage called Neptune's Bellows so that we could get inside Deception Island. There was a sense of wonder all around.

It was cold and chilly on deck and a wee bit windy. A brave crowd had gathered on deck to view our narrow entrance through the slim channel into Deception Island.

The gap at the entrance to Deception Island in Antarctica is incredibly tight. Why? Because this island in Antarctica is shaped like a C. At least from a bird's eye view and it is deceiving hence the island's name. Our captain glided the boat calmly through!

Yes the entrance into Deception Island in Antarctica really is like going into a letter "c" and this made for a slowed down section of the amazing Antarctic adventure, it was another brilliant time to be out on the deck as the captain, from Bulgaria Asparuh Chorbadzhiev directed the boat through the narrow entrance called Neptune's Bellows.

While on board you don't always get the chance to visit the bridge of the vessel so this was a great chance to see the captain at work, doing an excellent job getting the boat through the narrow passage!

Despite strong winds, the captain steered the boat calmly through Neptune's Bellows and into Deception Island where a magical experience lay ahead. This was an amazing journey!

This has been significant for today's historians, who now use these texts to understand how religion, and life worked way back then.

I know precisely what you are thinking right now. "FREE?! In Orlando?! Yeah right!" But as a matter of fact there are quite a few free attractions in the Orlando area. Of course they aren't usually as spectacular as the more well known attractions, but when you're on a tight budget and you want a "day filler" be sure you check a few of these out.

Disney's Boardwalk

Take a leisurely walk along the Boardwalk by EPCOT, a re-creation of an Atlantic 1930s-style community. The forty five acre waterfront community is renowned for its lively nightclubs and amusement hot spots. Everyone is certain to have fun watching the various street musicians, magicians, and performers without cost.

Celebration

Wander the side walks of the community of Celebration. The neighborhood, built by Disney Imagineers, is a mixture of historic-themed residences and modern technology. Admire the old-fashioned establishments and let the children play in the interactive fountains. Go to the farmers market on a Sunday morning, and check out the many free events made available by Reading Trout Books. Tourists may even notice (artificial) snowfall in December.

Downtown Disney

You don't need a ticket to experience the Walt Disney World retail stores and entertainment. See glassblowers at Arribas Brothers; go and visit the 4,400-square-foot LEGO Imagination Center to take part in a "beat-the-clock" building contest, and also check out a 12-foot T. Rex and a 30-foot sea serpent, each made of several thousand LEGO bricks.

The Firework Shows

Simply because you aren't in the park, it doesn't mean you can't watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks. There are a few superb viewing spots by the Magic Kingdom Resort Hotels. A number of my favorites are Bay Lake Tower, The Polynesian Resort beach, along with The Grand Floridian Resort. These places will often play the background music to make sure you get the full experience.

The Legend of Spook Hill

Up Close to Cape Horn

The magic of Cape Horn - this is basically the last part of planet earth as you head to the South Pole that you can realistically live on! Any further south and it's just too cold to live. Michael Palin once managed to step foot here on a BBC Documentary a few years back and now it was time to make the trip to Cape Horn.[]

It's owned by Chile, not Argentina and forms the southern point of the island area known as Tierra Del Fuego. I love the name actually - CAPE HORN. It has a certain inspired ring to it. I was hell bent on seeing it for real, and selfishly I wanted to step foot on it.

It's not cheap to land on the Cape of Horn and Michael Palin got it all paid for so that's why he could afford it. He was a posh English type on a rich travel budget. I backpacked my way to Antarctica so to land on the Horn sadly wasn't within my budget. Besides, Chilean officials do not allow any ships to go tithin a certain distance of Cape Horn, especially in strong waters - it's around 12 or 13 miles for the usual proximity to the horn, unless special permission has been granted.

Our boat, the MS Expedition was built in Denmark, registered in Liberia and sailing between Antarctica and Argentina. On the way down to Antarctica, we seemed to take a fast, steady direct route down the Drake Passage, and late at night, meaning we were all asleep when we crossed the place where Cape Horn was. Furthermore we were a few hundred kilometres too far east anyhow![]

Onboard the boat there was talk about whether we could go anywhere near Cape Horn on the way back to Argentina. There were clues onboard that this may happen. Screening an onboard documentary about Cape Horn was one, yet the crew were saying nothing!

However the map of the route onboard the ship was the giveaway as we had departed from Antarctica at Elephant Island and were changing direction rapidly, instead of heading directly north, there was a slight tilting to the north west, where Cape Horn sits.

This meant we were obviously planning to sail within viewing distance of Cape Horn, which was then rumoured to be our final "surprise" on board. This was later confirmed at that day's "Recap and briefing" where we were told we would get an early morning wake up call on our approach to Cape Horn so none of us would miss out. We were told this would be around 5 am.

So we were all set to see Cape Horn in the flesh and get up close to it but this was also the final night on board our ship. This meant a late one in the bar up toasting to our amazing trip and watching the sunset on one side and rise on the other side of the boat almost simultaneously at 2 am. By 3am I was asleep and ready to be wakened up for the viewing of the magical Cape Horn.

I awoke at 5 am just a few hours later, and awoke Mark my cabin mate to say "It's 5 am, aren't we supposed to be near Cape Horn now?" I looked out the window and there was no sign of Cape Horn so we drifted back to sleep and waited on the wake up call. I awoke again at 6 am, still with no announcement from The Bridge about whether or not we had reached Cape Horn, but I decided to get up and shower and change anyway as I couldn't miss this chance.

Finally just before 7 am we had the announcement that we were on our approach to Cape Horn. We were also informed that the Captain had been in touch with the Chilean authorities and that we were able to breach the normal barrier of 12 - 13 miles within the Cape.

Once we were that close to Cape Horn everyone was busy staring out at it and taking photos. We got within 3 miles of it in the end and it was a magnificent moment. None of us landed on Cape Horn but we saw it with our own eyes!

The Best Place to Watch Wishes at Magic Kingdom

Below I'm going to deliver my thoughts and opinions on the best spots to view Wishes at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.

The perfect spot mostly relies on whatever the person/ group of people is considering to do afterwards. For instance, it's no good for a person that wants to make a rapid exit from the park, to view the show from Fantasyland. But then again observing the show from a place not far from the park exit and wishing to stay in the park for a couple of hours after is a waste of a good chance to get closer to the show. For this reason, before making the decision, determine where you are going once the fireworks have ended.

If You Want to Be Near the Castle.

So I can understand that some of my readers may totally forget exactly how risky fireworks can be and get so excited about being at the Magic Kingdom, that they actually want to be a part the show! (Only a joke. You are definitely safe at all the Disney parks). However if you wish to get a real up close view, then the castle area is best for you.

The Hub is that circular section found in front of Cinderella Castle that links all of the lands together. I've actually viewed Wishes in every location you can possibly imagine. The Hub, Main Street, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Fort Wilderness Campground beach, around the back of the park at Disney University, the bridge to Tomorrowland, the Polynesian Resort beach, and at the top of Bay Lake Tower. Out of all these places, in the front section of the Hub has to be the worst!

The reason why I don't like being in the front area, and by that I mean between Walt and Mickey's "Partners" statue and Cinderella Castle, is mainly because the castle will completely block the view of the fireworks that are behind the castle. One time I had just finished eating dinner at Cinerella's Royal Table, and my family found ourselves extremely close to the castle to watch the show. It wasn't pleasant in the slightest, and I had a terrible crick in my neck from having to look directly above me during the show. I undoubtedly did not have a great time!

The Best Place to Watch The Fireworks.

All that being said, so long as you stay towards the back of the Hub you will enjoy the greatest experience possible. Although I do suggest that you stay towards the right of the Castle to get a far better view when a certain fairy flies through the sky.

I personally think the best position to watch Wishes is from the seating area just outside of the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor at the Castle end of Main Street (check a park map if you are unsure of where it is). If you can get seats there, you will get an amazing view of all aspects of the show. But I would suggest that you get there about an hour before the show begins.
