Why I think this Summer Camp is Best

By Brittany Flokstra

Who knew when my son turned 10 I would enter the world of Summer Camps in WI,. I knew it was going to be more than a summer of trips to the zoo, baseball and television but I had no idea how wonderful Summer Camp was going to be for my son.

Today, my son is 15 and has attended Swift Nature Camp for, four years and he will return for as long as we can. He loves it. His ADHD seems to be little trouble at camp.

The hands-on approach to leadership by the counselors and directors is great. Camp has worked on his social skill development and confidence-building.

Jeff and Lonnie, along with enthusiastic counselors, provide an atmosphere that encourages positive life skills to be developed. My son has grown so much for his time at SNC. Today he has greater peer understanding and empathy, better self-confidence and trust, his leadership skills increased, an understanding of group dynamics and fair process and many other valuable relational skills.

At first I like all parents was reluctant to sending him to a place I had never seen, except in a dvd and the website. Yet the rewards were well worth it! I talked to Jeff and Lonnie over the phone before I signed him up for the Discovery Camp . A special program for the First time at Camp.

Lonnie was so willing to chat about any and all question I had. Thus calming, my fears then making the decision easy. So off my son went taking the bus to camp, Yet, I picked him up when camp was over so I could see first-hand all what Swift Nature Camp was all about.

His excitement for Swift was limitless. I'm not sure if he took a breath between stories on the whole ride home!

The website of Swift Nature Camp says everything need. To me, I love how the camp is set up. Each cabins houses the same gender and age. They do activities together, including laundry and cabin clean up.

Almost every afternoon the campers can choose a variety of typical camp activities (arts ... crafts, archery, swimming, horses and much more). My kid loved going to the Nature Center and learning more about animals.

This Environmental Education Camp provides awareness and preservation of nature. The Nature Center is complete with microscopes and lots of hands on activities. There is also a small petting zoo of well-adored animals. But most fun for the kids is chasing frogs and turtles outdoors.

Of course there is plenty of campfire, friendships, laughter, games, food, sports, fun, drama, singing, etc. that makes overnight (residential) camp an experience one remembers for their entire life.

This camp is a general camp and not for jocks or brain-e-aks. At Swift Kids get to be kids and experience all sorts of different activities with a diverse set of campers and counselors. I was also happy to learn that SNC was a Coed Summer Camp, I think this more like the real world. So much more is learned than at a specialized camp.

My boy learns each summer. We have noticed wonderful improvement in his attitude along with manners and abilities. He is more mature, pleasant and competent. You can not put a price on his experiences and the social education he has gained from Swift Nature Camp.

When I would talk to other parents we would often comment that their is no place that tutors kids in social skills. We were wrong! We found exactly what my son needed at exactly the right time in his life.

Should you be thinking about overnight summer camp for your kid, consider Swift. I think it is so successful because it is a non-competitive, confidence-building camp where kids get to be kids. I know it is the best thing we ever did for our son.

A special Thank you to Lonnie and all the magnificent counselors, cooks, nurses, etc. We hope our son returns as a counselor when he is older (it is a new goal)!
