Switching From A Gasoline Powered To Torqeedo Electric Outboard

By Debra Cooley

Torqeedo electric outboard brings a whole new refreshing change after switching from a gas powered one, especially when you are considering going downstream for fishing. Its maintenance cost is often considered to be less expensive. Additionally, it rarely needs any maintenance.

Instead of purchasing a new one, you can just convert an old gas-powered outboard to one that is electric. It is more often than not easier to operate the gas-powered ones because of their ability to provide high mileage. However, they also have their downside due to their high costs as well as a negative environmental impact.

A simple conversion to an electric one just requires changing the muffler. Alternatively, instead of purchasing a new one, you can convert an old gas-powered one to one that is electrically powered. In case you would like to perform the conversion on your outboard, you can follow the steps discussed below.

The first is to turn off the gas-powered outboard. Then, you will be required to use a screw driver to unscrew the casing on it. Lift off the gas tank using a wrench after unbolting it.

The next step is to unbolt the motor and remove it from the engine. The bolts on the cylinders and piston are then taken out. Then, you need to position the outboard that is electric to replace the one that functions with gasoline.

Immediately after fixing the electric one, attach the motor and simultaneously drive the shaft together and align them. The two separate tips should be perpendicular to each other. As you try to twist its drive shaft, the motor should also twist or turn.

The motor should then be attached in position tightly. Unscrew the control panel by removing the wires out of the socket. Lift up the control panel after pulling out the wires. The control panel should be replaced using a 300-amp and then reconnect the wires back as before. You can now place back the case after removing the battery sockets out of the engine.

At the rear of your boat, locate the engine bracket, drill some holes and fix the rack by bolting it. Drill three separate holes; on both sides of the rack, and the third one on one end of the leather strap. The other end of the strap should be bolted to the left hole.

Positioning the six batteries side by side, cover them with the strap and pull it tight. After this, a hole should be drilled in the strap and bolted in. Next, you should bolt the outboard onto the engine bracket.

After bolting the outboard, the next step is connecting the negative wire to the negative socket from the left battery, as well as the positive part of the wire from the left battery to the negative socket on its right side. All the six batteries should be connected in a series. Finally, the positive socket from the controller should be connected to the positive(+) wire from the battery on the right part. You are now ready to try out your Torqeedo electric outboard on your next fishing trip downstream.
