Antique Fishing Lures Are More Popular Than Ever

By Amanda Baird

For many thousands of years, people have been fishing. This activity today is usually looked at as a recreational sport in the eyes of most people. Oddly enough, one area that has been growing the fastest in this popular sport is one that doesn't take place on the water, in the collecting of antique fishing lures. This has become a wealth of enjoyment for many hobbyists, or sometimes, an actual source of income.

Unlike most modern equipment sold that is most often mass produced on a large scale, an older type fishing lure is normally going to be something that is handmade. There are literally millions of avid collectors, all around the planet, who currently are seeking these exquisite tackle items, considered by lure lovers to truly be a form of art. In reality, most of these will be quite different from any of the newer items of their kind.

These amazing pieces can be the source of essentially unlimited variations of composition, assembly and colors. Most often they will be hand painted, are normally composed of very little, if any plastic, and are usually intricately constructed. A stunning array of vintage tackle can be found that is no longer manufactured or sold in any popular retail stores.

While there are some lures that can have a significant worth, most collections are going to be created mainly for the owners pleasure and not for any kind of monetary gain. Collectors quickly will admit that they have an affection for these types of specialty items for their distinct craftsmanship, individual beauty and high quality. It really doesn't matter if the collection has just a few, or hundreds of these unique individual items, the collectors will always be in love with their lures.

The primary motivation for collecting can come from a number of different places. Some of the reasons for being drawn to these intriguing devices can include an obsessive interest in simple nostalgia, historical significance and aesthetic appeal. As with any hobby, everyone has their own personal area of interest and justification for becoming involved.

For many of the people who share this specific interest, there can be emotional attractions that remind them of childhood memories. Some people might be fascinated by the history of a particular item. Some are drawn mainly to the physical appearance that is quite often lacking in modern manufactured tackle. Some may say that they do it because they simply like it. Regardless of where someone begins, collectors can easily get hooked on this hobby.

As it is with many other collectible items, there is much investment, competition and commitment in and about the community of lure collectors. Even when monetary value is not really a factor, this is surely a pursuit that is serious for those who do get involved. Once someone begins, it can suddenly become a matter of enjoyment, passion and culture.

For those wishing to become a collector of some of these fantastic antiques, there are a variety of various trading events, collection clubs and commercial dealers that can be found in places around the Internet or possibly in local publications. A great deal of these prized items can sometimes be picked up at places like estate sales, flea markets or garage sales. As with most types of collectibles, one never can predict when or where these objects could turn up.

Whether it is viewed as simply a hobby or even a serious investment, non-fishermen and avid anglers alike are likely able to receive large and continual pleasure from collecting, displaying and owning these unique antiques. Even though they are hard to find, millions of serious collectors are willing to sell, share or trade antique fishing lures.
