A trip to South America is the stuff of bucket lists. The continent has a lot to offer in terms of wildlife, archaeological sites, mysterious cultures, adventure and fun. It is now possible to do a Galapagos and Machu Picchu tour to see two great attractions in one trip.

For travelers who love nature the Galapagos are the ultimate trip. There is nowhere else like these islands. Not only is the wildlife endemic, it is not scared of humans. This means you can get close to wild animals in a way which is normally impossible. You can take pictures and they will just sit there, the sealions practically pose for you.

The park has to enforce strict rules to protect the animals as sometimes they are so inquisitive they will approach visitors. There are lots of islands in the group so it is best to take a cruise on a boat so that you can take in everything on offer. Cruises usually last around a week and visit a range of islands with different things to see on each.

As well as daily land safaris, it is also possible to swim and snorkel from the boats. The area has an incredible range of marine life as it sits in the confluence of three major ocean currents. At different times of year it is possible to see hammerhead sharks, several species of whale, turtles, dolphins, penguins, seahorses and huge numbers of fish.

Ecuador also has incredible things to see on the mainland. The capital city Quito is a World Heritage site with beautiful colonial buildings. There are lots of volcanoes, glaciers, pristine cloud forest and beautiful jungle.

The other half of the trip will take in majestic Peru. It has the deepest canyons, the highest sand dunes, the most diverse rainforest and a mind boggling number ruins left by many ancient civilizations. The most important of these is Machu Picchu.

Any tour has to take visitors to Cusco. This was the Inca capital and is now a charming historical city with modern amenities. From there, travelers take a unique train ride down the Sacred Valley to the mysterious citadel of Machu Picchu. It is situated in the high jungle and the climate is totally different from a few miles away in the city, it is humid and warm with palm trees and orchids.

Travelling to the high Andes requires some planning. The rainy season can be challenging for visitors and the climate is unique. It is dry and hot during the day and cool, even cold at night. At 3300 meters above sea level, Cusco can cause some visitors to suffer from altitude sickness so make sure to prepare well.

Visiting two of the most impressive destinations in the world in one trip is an incredible opportunity. Using a good tour operator will save you tons of hassle. Their local knowledge will prove invaluable and make your experience truly special.
